Discussions about a Union bowling alley was under consideration as far back as the late 1940s.
By the early 1950s, the Women's Athletic Association (WAA) participated in bowling tournaments at Laramie and Colorado, the intramural beginnings held
at the Mapleway Bowling Lanes.
In January 1955, a special subcommittee was established by the Union to discuss expansions and specifically a bowling alley and better student services.
By March 1957, Governor Milward Simpson signed into law a bill allowing issuance of $625,000 in bonds to fund the expansion of the Student Union. The
basement will have a ten-lane bowling alley with automatic pinsetters. Construction would begin summer or fall 1958 and would be completed in 18 months.
In February 1958, Cheyenne's Garton and Garton wins the bid to construct the Student Union addition.
While nearly complete, the new addition to the Union had a dedication from September 24-27, 1959 with music and bowling, Norm Nichols (Colorado star bowler)
was present at the dedication September 27.
In November 1960, the formation of the Intermountain Collegiate Bowling Conference took place, encompassing other universities and colleges across neighboring
states, and local tryouts were held to determine the best team to represent the University of Wyoming.
In 1964, the Colorado-Wyoming Collegiate Bowling Conference was formed and the University of Wyoming bowling team wins the league season with a 43-13 record.
The 1965-66 University of Wyoming bowling team wins the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Bowling Conference league season handily with a 52-16 record.
The Wyoming Union Bowling Lanes was not listed in the December 1960-1961 Campus Directory for some reason.
In 1970, the 22nd Annual Wyoming Men's State Bowling Tournament was held here and at Laramie Lanes.
